About the Country Wheel
The country wheel is a random country picker loaded with every country the United Nations counts as a state — 195 of them — so one spin gives you a country for a quiz, a lesson, a dinner theme or a travel daydream without typing a list longer than the wheel itself.
Which countries are on the wheel
The 193 member states of the United Nations, as listed on un.org on 2 October 2026, plus the UN's two non-member observer states: the Holy See, written here as Vatican City, and the State of Palestine, written as Palestine. Names are the common English short forms in alphabetical order — Bolivia rather than "Plurinational State of Bolivia", South Korea rather than "Republic of Korea" — except where a country asked for a new English name and the UN adopted it: Czechia, Türkiye, Eswatini, Cabo Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Timor-Leste, North Macedonia and Myanmar. Places that are not UN states, such as Taiwan, Kosovo, Greenland or Puerto Rico, are not on the starting list. Every country appears once, so each has a 1 in 195 chance — 0.51%.
Reading a wheel with 195 sectors
From 95 entries on, a sector is too thin to carry readable text, so the country wheel shows its 195 sectors without names and announces the winner in the result box under the wheel, with its chance. The spin history keeps your last 50 results. Delete enough lines to bring the list below 95 — one continent, say — and the names appear on the sectors again.
Ways people use a country wheel
- Geography quiz: spin, then name the capital, the continent or the flag colors before the next spin.
- Cooking challenge: spin for the country whose dish you cook this weekend.
- School reports and Model UN: switch on "Remove the winner" and spin once per student or delegation, so every country goes to one person.
- Travel ideas: spin for a country you know nothing about and read up on it.
- Language or music night: spin for the country whose language, film or music you try tonight.
Changing the list and getting it back
The list is alphabetical, not grouped by continent, so for a wheel of one region it is quickest to press "Clear" and type or paste those countries. This page holds up to 200 entries, so there is room to add a place the UN list leaves out on a line of its own. Edits are saved in this browser for this page only; "Restore all" puts back the countries that "Remove the winner" took off, and "Restore the preset" replaces any edits with the original 195.
