Practical Applications of BMI Interpretation
Understanding what your BMI means helps you to:
- Assess health status and disease risks
- Determine if weight correction is needed
- Plan nutrition and exercise programs
- Track progress when changing lifestyle habits
Limitations of BMI Interpretation
It's important to remember that BMI is a screening tool that doesn't account for:
- Muscle-to-fat ratio
- Body fat distribution
- Age-related considerations
- Individual physiological characteristics
Note: BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. Consult a healthcare professional for a personal health assessment.

FAQ
How is BMI calculated?
BMI is body weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared (kg/m²); in imperial units it is weight in pounds × 703 ÷ height in inches squared. An adult of 70 kg and 1.75 m has a BMI of 70 ÷ 1.75² = 22.9. The formula was published by the Belgian statistician Adolphe Quetelet in 1832 and renamed the body mass index by Ancel Keys in 1972.
What do the BMI categories mean?
On the WHO adult scale, below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is a healthy weight, 25–29.9 is overweight and 30 or more is obesity, split into class I (30–34.9), class II (35–39.9) and class III (40 and above).
When does BMI give a misleading answer?
BMI knows only weight and height, never what that weight is made of: a muscular athlete is often labelled overweight, while an older person who has lost muscle can score normal with too much body fat. Children and teenagers are read against age-and-sex percentiles instead, and for many Asian populations the WHO suggests lower action points of 23 and 27.5.
