How much sleep each number of cycles adds up to. Falling asleep is not counted here, because it is not sleep.

How to read the result
- There is more than one time because there is no single right answer. Each row is a different length of night: going to bed earlier means sleeping longer, and the row says exactly how much longer.
- The count starts at the moment you fall asleep, not the moment you lie down. That is why falling asleep is part of the calculation — 15 minutes by default, and you can change it.
- When a time lands on a different day, the page says so in words. A 9:45 pm bedtime for a 7:00 am alarm falls on the evening before that alarm, and the row is labelled that way.
- The times are guidance, not a schedule. A 90-minute cycle is an average, and a real cycle is shorter or longer.
What a sleep cycle is, and why 90 minutes
A sleep cycle is the sequence of stages sleep runs through before starting over: light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep. A night usually holds four to six of them.
The mix inside a cycle shifts as the night goes on. Deep sleep takes up more of the early cycles and REM more of the later ones, which is why the hours before the alarm feel different from the first hours after falling asleep.
90 minutes is an average, and it is the only reason a calculator like this can exist at all. An adult cycle runs roughly 70 to 120 minutes, changes from cycle to cycle within one night, and differs between people. So a real cycle boundary can sit tens of minutes away from the time printed above — that is normal, not an error in the arithmetic.
Where this calculator stops
- It calculates time, and nothing else. It does not know your age or how you actually sleep, and neither enters the arithmetic.
- The cycle is taken as 90 minutes, which is an average. The individual 70-120 minute spread cannot be handled here, because it is measurable only by sleeping, not by counting.
- How long you take to fall asleep is your own estimate, not a measurement.
- The calculation assumes an unbroken night. Waking up in the middle, daytime naps and shift schedules are outside what it describes.
