How to take the reaction test
- Press the dark panel — or hit the space bar — to start.
- The panel turns red. Wait, and do not press anything.
- The moment it turns green, press as fast as you can.
- Repeat five times. The page then shows your average, median, best and spread.
What you measure here is not pure nerve conduction. The number includes the time your screen needs to show the green frame, the delay of your mouse, keyboard or touchscreen, and the browser's own timing granularity. The same person can be 20-40 ms apart on a 60 Hz laptop and a 144 Hz gaming monitor. Compare yourself with yourself on the same equipment, and treat the bands below as orientation rather than as a verdict.
What your result means
The bands below are reference points for a simple visual reaction — one stimulus, one response. They are not a medical or diagnostic scale.

| 300-399 ms | Slower than typical. Most often fatigue, divided attention, an unfamiliar input device or a slow display — not the nervous system. |
| 400 ms and above | Noticeably slower. Worth repeating in a quiet moment on a device you use every day before reading anything into it. |
What changes your reaction time
Sleep and fatigue
The single largest everyday factor. A short night moves a simple visual reaction by tens of milliseconds and makes results far less consistent — which is why the spread between your best and worst attempt is often more telling than the average itself.
Age
Simple reaction time is fastest in the late teens and twenties, then drifts upward slowly and steadily. The change across a decade is smaller than the change between a rested and a tired evening.
Type of signal
Reactions to sound are usually faster than reactions to light, because an auditory signal needs fewer processing steps to reach the motor cortex. A test built on a colour change, like this one, therefore reads slightly slower than a beep-based one.
Your equipment
Display refresh rate, wireless versus wired input, and touchscreen versus mouse each add their own delay. This is the most common reason the same person scores differently on two devices.
Attention and expectation
A varying delay before the signal — 1.2 to 4.5 seconds here — stops you from timing the green instead of reacting to it. When the wait feels long, attention drifts and the attempt gets slower.
Practice
Results improve over the first handful of runs simply from familiarity with the task, then plateau. Real gains come from regular practice, not from repeating the test ten times in one sitting.
