How to Round to the Nearest Place

Find the place and look at the digit to its right: 5–9 — add 1 to the place digit, 0–4 — leave it; then drop the digits to the right (in the whole part, replace them with zeros).

Example: 26.553 to the nearest hundredth

Common mistakes

  • Round once, from the original number: 2.449 to the nearest tenth is 2.4. Rounding in two steps, 2.449 → 2.45 → 2.5, is wrong — the 5 in 2.45 was itself made by rounding.
  • A halfway value rounds away from zero in school and in Excel ROUND: 2.5 → 3. Round half to even (banker's rounding, Python round()) picks the even neighbour instead: 2.5 → 2, 3.5 → 4.
  • Negative numbers round by their digits, and a halfway value goes away from zero: -2.5 → -3, not -2.
  • “To the nearest tenth” means one digit after the decimal point, not the tens: 31.4159 to the nearest tenth is 31.4, to the nearest ten — 30.

FAQ

How do you round to the nearest tenth?

Look at the hundredths digit, the second after the decimal point: 5–9 add 1 to the tenths digit, 0–4 leave it, then drop everything after the tenths. 3.249 → 3.2 (4 < 5); 0.96 → 1.0 (6 ≥ 5, and the 9 carries over).

Does 5 round up?

In school rounding and Excel ROUND, a 5 with only zeros after it is exactly halfway and goes away from zero: 18.375 → 18.38, 2.5 → 3, -2.5 → -3. Round half to even (banker's rounding) picks the even neighbour instead: 2.5 → 2.

How is rounding to a place different from significant figures?

Rounding to a place fixes where the last digit stands — the nearest hundredth always keeps two decimals, whatever the size of the number. Significant figures count digits from the first non-zero one: 0.004567 to the nearest hundredth is 0.00, but to 2 significant figures it is 0.0046.
