Addition with Regrouping: How It Works
How it works: 348 + 256 in a column
| 1carry | 1carry | ||
| 3 | 4 | 8 | |
| + | 2 | 5 | 6 |
| 6 | 0 | 4 |
With regrouping: 2 carries — into the tens and the hundreds
Write the numbers ones under ones, tens under tens. Add from right to left; when a column makes 10 or more, write its ones and carry 1 to the next column.
348 + 256 = 604 →Practice examples with answers

Common mistakes
- Forgetting the carry: 348 + 256 then comes out as 594 instead of 604 — the 1 from 8 + 6 = 14 never reaches the tens.
- Lining the numbers up on the left: 453 + 89 then turns into 453 + 890 = 1,343 instead of 542. Ones go under ones.
- Writing the whole column sum: 8 + 6 = 14 is written as 4 with 1 carried, not as 14 under the ones.

FAQ
How does addition with regrouping work?
Write the numbers right-aligned, ones under ones. Add each column from right to left. When a column adds up to 10 or more, write its ones digit and carry 1 to the next column on the left, where it is added along with the digits there.
What does carrying the 1 mean?
It moves a ten into the next column. In 8 + 6 = 14 the 4 stays in the ones and the 1 — one ten — is written above the tens and added there: that is why 348 + 256 has a 0 in the tens of 604.
How do you check column addition?
Subtract one addend from the sum. If 348 + 256 = 604, then 604 − 256 must give 348. Every result page links that subtraction, worked in a column.
Can this calculator add decimals?
No, it adds whole numbers only. For decimals, line up the decimal points instead of the last digits and add the same way, carrying across the point.
