It counts the digits after the decimal point; the whole part 3 is not one of them. So the first 5 digits of pi here are 14159, and the limit you can ask for runs up to 1,000,000,000 digits.

Why does a large request show fewer digits than I asked for?

Up to 100,000 digits the table prints the whole sequence from the first digit, in rows of 100. Above that it prints the last 100,000 digits ending exactly at your limit, because a browser page cannot lay out a billion digits — for the complete sequence use the downloadable TXT and ZIP files.

How many digits of pi are needed in practice?

NASA JPL navigates interplanetary spacecraft with 15 decimal places, and about 40 digits are enough to compute the circumference of the observable universe to within the width of a hydrogen atom. Everything beyond that is used for recreation, for hardware benchmarks and for testing computation algorithms.
