    Perimeter of a Rectangle Formula

    Geometry Formulas: Area, Volume, Perimeter
    Formula:

    What is the formula for the perimeter of a rectangle?

    Answer

    Perimeter of a rectangle
    P = 2 · (a + b)

    Here a is the side (or base), b is the second side. The result comes out in units.

    Where the formula comes from

    P = 2 · (a + b)

    Walk the outline: a, then b, then a again, then b again. Two of each, so 2a + 2b, which is 2(a + b).

    Worked examples

    Let a = 8, b = 5. Then the perimeter of a rectangle = 26 units.

    Let a = 12.5, b = 4. Then the perimeter of a rectangle = 33 units.

    The common mistake

    Answering with the area. Perimeter is a length and comes out in metres; area is a length squared and comes out in square metres. The two formulas take the same two numbers, which is exactly why they get swapped.

    FAQ

    What is the formula for the perimeter of a rectangle?

    Perimeter of a rectangle P = 2 · (a + b)

    Where does this formula come from?

    Walk the outline: a, then b, then a again, then b again. Two of each, so 2a + 2b, which is 2(a + b).

    What is the most common mistake here?

    Answering with the area. Perimeter is a length and comes out in metres; area is a length squared and comes out in square metres. The two formulas take the same two numbers, which is exactly why they get swapped.

    How do I use this formula?

    Put your own numbers in place of the letters. With a = 12.5, b = 4, for instance, the formula P = 2 · (a + b) gives = 33 units.
