The formula and where it comes from

Everything is worked out from a single number: how many days the year has. That number takes exactly two values, and February is what chooses between them:

Common year = 365 days · Leap year = 366 days

A year is a leap year if it divides by 4; a year ending in two zeroes counts only if it also divides by 400. That is why 1900 was a common year, 2000 was a leap year, and 2100 will be common again. The rule is not decorative: the Earth goes round the Sun in about 365.2425 days, and inserting one day every four years with those two exceptions leaves the average Gregorian year at exactly 365.2425 days.

How to work it out, step by step

  1. Decide whether the year is a leap year using the rule above. You get 365 or 366 days.
  2. Multiply by the constant factors: 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in an hour, 60 seconds in a minute. None of them depends on the year.
  3. Count weeks with a remainder: 365 = 52 × 7 + 1 and 366 = 52 × 7 + 2. Months are always 12 — that unit does not depend on the leap year at all.

Where this is used

  • Planning a year — 52 weeks for 52 tasks, an annual budget split by week or by month
  • Rates and pay — an hourly rate × 8,760 hours gives the year's total time, not the annual salary
  • Interest and subscriptions — banking formulas divide by 365 or by 366 depending on the year, and a leap year changes the result
  • Programming — 31,536,000 seconds in TTLs and timeouts; a leap year adds 86,400 more
  • Countdowns and habits — how many times a daily or weekly action repeats over a year

Limits and caveats

  • A month is not an interval. There are always 12, but their length runs from 28 to 31 days. "How many months are in a year" is the only question in this family whose answer does not depend on the year.
  • 52 weeks are calendar weeks, not ISO numbers. Under ISO 8601 some years carry 53 numbered weeks. Here whole seven-day weeks are counted, which is why the answer is composite: 52 weeks and a remainder.
  • Seconds are calendar seconds, with no leap seconds. 27 of them have been inserted into UTC since 1972, the last at the end of 2016. The year that got one held one second more than the arithmetic says.
  • The Gregorian calendar only, from 1583 onwards. For earlier years the leap rule does not describe the calendar anybody actually used.
  • Working days are a different question. Holidays and bridge days do not change the length of the year.
  • A year with no name only has an average. If the question names no year, the time converter can only answer with the average Gregorian year of 365.2425 days. The exact answer appears exactly when the year is named.

How Many Weeks Are in a Year

This calculator answers how many days, weeks, months, hours, minutes and seconds a given year holds. A common year is 365 days and a leap year is 366, and the page shows the figure that is true for the year you name. For example, it can help you find out how many weeks are in 2026? (The answer is: 52 weeks and 1 day). Pick the unit (e.g. "Weeks") and the year (e.g. "2026"), then hit the "Find out" button.

FAQ

How many weeks are in a year?

52 weeks and 1 day in a common year, 52 weeks and 2 days in a leap year. A year is not a whole number of weeks: 365 = 52 × 7 + 1, and 366 = 52 × 7 + 2. That leftover day is why your birthday moves one weekday forward each year, and two after a leap year.

How many days, hours, minutes and seconds are in a year?

A common year holds 365 days, 8,760 hours, 525,600 minutes and 31,536,000 seconds. A leap year holds 366 days, 8,784 hours, 527,040 minutes and 31,622,400 seconds. Months are the one unit that never changes: 12 in every year.

Which years are leap years?

A year is a leap year when it divides by 4, except that a year ending in two zeroes counts only if it also divides by 400. That is why 1900 had 365 days while 2000 had 366, and why 2100 will be skipped as well. The next leap years are 2028, 2032 and 2036.

Why does a converter give a fractional number of days for one year?

Because they are not told which year. The average Gregorian year is 365.2425 days long, and a converter that turns "1 year" into days can only use that average. Name a year and the answer stops being an average: 2026 has exactly 365 days and 2028 has exactly 366.
