The formula and where it comes from

The day of the year is a date's position counted from January 1: January 1 is day 1, February 1 is day 32, and December 31 is day 365 in a common year and day 366 in a leap year. Everything else follows from that number and the length of the year.

Days left = days in the year − today's day number · Share passed = day number ÷ days in the year × 100%

Today counts as passed: "days left" are the days after today. That is why December 31 leaves 0 days and 100% of the year, and January 1 is day 1 with 364 days ahead (365 in a leap year).

How to work it out, step by step

    1. Find the day number: add up the lengths of the months already gone and add today's date. October 5 of a common year: 273 + 5 = 278.
    2. Subtract it from the length of the year: 365 − 278 = 87 days to the end of the year. In a leap year subtract from 366, and every day number from March 1 on is one higher.
    3. Turn the rest into weeks and a share: 87 = 12 × 7 + 3, that is 12 weeks and 3 days; 278 ÷ 365 × 100 ≈ 76.2% of the year has passed.

    Where this is used

    • Yearly goals — 76% of the year is gone and half the plan is done: time to adjust the pace
    • Budgets and year-end — how many days are left to use an annual allowance or close the books
    • Study and projects — how many weeks remain before the end of the year for a course or a release
    • Ordinal dates — logistics, manufacturing and weather data often write a day by its number: day 278 instead of October 5
    • Habits and challenges — "day 278 of 365" in a journal, a streak or a tracker app

    Limits and caveats

    • Leap years. A leap year has 366 days, and every day number from March 1 on is one higher than in a common year.
    • Time zone. Around midnight different cities are on different dates. The answer above follows your browser's time zone; without JavaScript it is counted in UTC and says so.
    • Working days are not counted. Every calendar day counts here, one after another.
    • Weeks are seven-day blocks, not week numbers. "12 weeks and 3 days" is the remainder split into whole weeks; the ISO 8601 week number is a different count.
    • The holiday is a separate page. A countdown in hours and minutes to the January 1 holiday is on how many days until the January 1 holiday.
    • Gregorian calendar only, from 1583. For earlier years the leap-year rule does not describe the calendar people actually used.

    FAQ

How many days are left in 2026?

Until the end of 2026 there are 87 days

How is the day of the year counted?

January 1 is day 1, and every day after it adds one, so December 31 is day 365 in a common year and day 366 in a leap year. The days left are the days after today: days in the year minus today's number. Today counts as passed, which is why December 31 shows 0 days left and 100% of the year.

Why is the share of the year a little ahead of the clock?

Because the share counts whole days and treats today as already used. At 9 a.m. on day 278 of 365 the clock has covered 277.4 days, while the page says 278 ÷ 365 ≈ 76.2%. The difference is never more than one day, about 0.27% of the year.

Does the day of the year depend on my time zone?

Yes. Around midnight two places can be on different calendar days, so their day numbers differ by one. The page shows the count for your own date: it reads your time zone in the browser and switches the answer, while a page opened without JavaScript counts from UTC and says so.
