    Business Days From Today

Counts US federal business days: skips weekends and the 11 federal holidays on their observed dates

    "Business Days From Today" Calculator

    What is the date
    business days from today

    How Business Days Are Counted

    What the calculator does

Enter how many business days to count — the page gives the date, says how many calendar days and weeks that is, names every federal holiday inside the span (ordinary weekends are given as a number) and converts the business days into working hours at 8 hours a day.

    The rule

Business days = Monday to Friday − federal holidays on their observed dates

A business day here is a weekday that is not one of the 11 legal public holidays of 5 U.S.C. §6103. A holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, one that falls on a Sunday — on the Monday after (§6103(b) and Executive Order 11582), and it is the observed day that stops being a business day. Business days and working days are the same thing on this page.

How to count, step by step

    1. Start tomorrow. Today is not counted — the usual convention for deadlines, the one Rule 6(a)(1)(A) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure states as “exclude the day of the event that triggers the period”.
    2. Walk forward one day at a time, skipping Saturdays, Sundays and every federal holiday on its observed date. If today is itself a weekend day or a holiday, the first day counted is simply the next business day.
    3. The day the count reaches N is the answer. The calendar days between today and that date show how long the wait really is.

    Common counts from today

The gap between the business-day and calendar-day columns is the weekends and federal holidays in between — which is why the same number of business days can mean a different wait from one week to the next.

Federal holidays in the next 12 months

    • Monday, October 12, 2026 — Columbus Day
    • Wednesday, November 11, 2026 — Veterans Day (Armistice Day)
    • Thursday, November 26, 2026 — Thanksgiving Day
    • Friday, December 25, 2026 — Christmas
    • Friday, January 1, 2027 — New Year
    • Monday, January 18, 2027 — Martin Luther King Jr. Day
    • Monday, February 15, 2027 — Presidents' Day (Washington's Birthday)
    • Monday, May 31, 2027 — Memorial Day
    • Friday, June 18, 2027 — Juneteenth (observed; June 19 falls on a Saturday)
    • Monday, July 5, 2027 — Independence Day (observed; July 4 falls on a Sunday)
    • Monday, September 6, 2027 — Labor Day

    Where it is used

    • Shipping and delivery — “arrives in 5–7 business days”: carriers do not count weekends or federal holidays, while the customer waits in calendar days.
    • Legal and court deadlines — notices and responses due “within 10 business days”; the day the period starts is not counted.
    • Government responses — federal agencies answer a FOIA request within 20 working days, counted without weekends and legal public holidays.
    • Payments and refunds — “refund within 3 business days”, check holds and payroll dates.
    • Work and projects — notice periods, onboarding steps and project milestones planned in working days.

What the count does not cover

Banks. The Federal Reserve closes on the same holidays but does not move a Saturday holiday to Friday, so that Friday is an ordinary banking day — for a payment or transfer deadline use your bank's schedule. States. State holidays such as Cesar Chavez Day or Patriots' Day are not counted; a deadline under state law may skip them. Other weeks. Six-day weeks and shift schedules follow their own rules, and some deadlines run in calendar days rather than business days — the rule that sets the deadline decides. This is a reference count, not legal advice.

    FAQ

What day does the count start from?

From tomorrow — today is not counted. This is the usual convention for deadlines, the same one Rule 6(a)(1)(A) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure uses: exclude the day of the event that triggers the period. If today is a Saturday, a Sunday or a federal holiday, the first day counted is the next business day. When today is a business day, counting it as day one gives a date one business day earlier.

    Which holidays are skipped?

The 11 legal public holidays of 5 U.S.C. §6103: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday (Presidents' Day), Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Each is skipped on the day it is observed: a holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, one that falls on a Sunday — on the Monday after. Juneteenth is counted from 2021, the year it became a federal holiday.

Do banks count business days the same way?

Almost, with one difference. The Federal Reserve closes on the same holidays but does not move a Saturday holiday to Friday, so that Friday is a federal day off and an ordinary banking day. When a holiday falls on a Sunday, banks close on Monday too. For a payment or transfer deadline check your bank's own schedule.

    Are state holidays counted?

No. Only federal holidays are skipped. State holidays such as Cesar Chavez Day, Patriots' Day or Mardi Gras close state offices and courts in their own states, and a deadline set by state law may skip them — check the state's calendar. A business day here is a working day of the federal Monday-to-Friday week; this is a reference count, not legal advice.
