How Much Sand for 100 Square Meters
How much sand do I need for 100 square meters?
Answer
That is 2,500 L, and it weighs roughly 4,125–5,000 kg (4.13–5 tonnes) when dry. The same patch under topsoil comes out quite differently — topsoil is lighter and normally goes down several times thicker.
How the Volume Is Calculated
The hundred is not a coefficient, only centimetres turned into metres: a layer 100 cm thick is exactly one metre, so a cubic metre spread 1 cm deep covers 100 m².
100 square meters × 2.5 cm ÷ 100
=2.5 m³
(2,500 L)

Depth scales the answer in a straight line, so the whole range fits in one table. Type any depth into the form above to work it out in full. The last column is the coverage of a single unit of volume, which is the number to keep in mind when a supplier quotes by the m³.
| Depth | Sand needed | One cubic metre covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1 cm | 1 m³ | 100 square meters |
| 2.5 cm | 2.5 m³ | 40 square meters |
| 4 cm | 4 m³ | 25 square meters |
| 5 cm | 5 m³ | 20 square meters |
| 8 cm | 8 m³ | 12.5 square meters |
| 10 cm | 10 m³ | 10 square meters |
What It Weighs and What to Order
Volume is the exact half of this page; weight is the approximate half. Only the top of the band has a source: the WSDOT Design Manual puts material that is essentially all sand at 2,000 kg per cubic metre compacted. Loose sand, which is how it arrives on a truck, is lighter — and WSDOT publishes no truck-measure figure for sand, so 1,650 kg is our own allowance rather than a quoted number.
| Volume | 2.5 m³ |
| In litres | 2,500 L |
| Weight, dry | 4,125–5,000 kg |
| In tons | 4.13–5 tonnes |
| Order with 10% for waste | 2.75 m³ |
The 10% is quoted, not invented: the WSDOT Design Manual tells estimators to increase required quantities by 10% to allow for waste when material is stockpiled. A screeded sand bed also loses depth once it is compacted. Bagged sand is usually sold by weight, so divide the 4,125–5,000 kg by the weight printed on the bag — and remember that band is wide, so it gives you a range of bag counts, not one number.
