How to convert liters to kilograms
A liter does not become a kilogram on its own
A liter measures volume, a kilogram measures mass. The only thing that converts one into the other is density — how many kilograms one liter of this particular substance comes to. That is why «how many kg in a liter» has no single answer: a liter of water weighs about a kilogram, a liter of honey close to one and a half, and a liter of liquefied gas half as much as water.
Three steps
- Find the density of the substance — in the table below or on its own page. It is measured in kilograms per liter, which is the same number as grams per milliliter.
- Multiply the volume by the density. Five liters of milk is 5 × 1.03 = 5.15 kg.
- Check the state of the material. For anything granular or piled the density depends on packing, so the honest answer is a range: a bucket of sand weighs 16.5–20 kg depending on whether it was settled or poured loose.

Where this actually comes up
- Cooking. A recipe gives milk or oil in grams while the bottle is in liters, or the other way round. A liter of milk weighs 1.03 kg, a liter of vegetable oil 0.92 kg.
- Preserves. Three liters of honey net is 4.26 kg — one of the rare cases you can check on a kitchen scale.
- Garage and fuel. A full 50-liter tank of gasoline weighs 37 kg, a 20-liter can of diesel 16.7 kg.
- Building and the garden. A bucket of cement is 12.5–14 kg, a bucket of soil 13–15 kg. For a whole site you work in volume rather than buckets — that is what the sand calculator and the topsoil calculator are for, and their densities are the same ones used here.
- Shipping limits. Transport limits are set in mass while containers are sold by volume, so a can or a drum has to be converted into kilograms.
Why one liter of water weighs one kilogram
This is not a coincidence but a leftover of the first definition. In 1795 the gram was defined as the mass of one cubic centimeter of water, so a liter of water weighed a kilogram by construction, and the liter itself was defined as a cubic decimeter. The mass standard was later detached from water — first to a platinum cylinder, and since 2019 to the Planck constant — and the match stopped being exact: at 20 °C a liter of water weighs 0.998 kg, and at 4 °C exactly 1.000 kg.
A gap of two thousandths shows up on no household scale, so the rule «a liter of water is a kilogram» holds. The mistake starts when it is carried over to other substances: for gasoline it overstates the weight by about a third, for honey it understates it by about as much.
Doing it in your head
It is enough to remember density as a multiplier on liters rather than as a separate number. Water, milk, juice, beer — call it one: as many liters, so many kilograms, and the error stays within a few percent. Oils and fuels are lighter than water: vegetable oil is about a tenth less, diesel a sixth less, and gasoline roughly three quarters, so 40 liters comes to about 29.6 kg. Honey goes the other way: a liter and a half will not make a kilogram, but a kilogram and a half per liter very nearly will. Sand is the heavy one — a ten-liter bucket is 16.5–20 kg. Cement is noticeably lighter than sand: 12.5–14 kg for the same bucket.
Bulk materials: why a range and not a number
For cement, sand, soil, coal, sugar, cucumbers and tomatoes the figure in the table is the bulk density: it says how much material fits into a container, not how dense the substance itself is. Air sits between the grains and the fruit, and how much of it depends on packing, size and moisture — which is why sources publish a band rather than a point.
The widest band belongs to coal: 0.654–1.266 kg/L by the IMSBC Code table. That is not measurement scatter but the material itself — rank, lump size and moisture change the weight of the same bucket twofold. Printing a single number instead of the band would be a claim about packing that the source never made, so pages for such materials print the range and name the state it was measured in.
Where the densities come from
Every figure carries a citable source, and the rule for admission was written down before the data was collected: two independent sources or one standard. Food liquids come from the FAO/INFOODS density database, gasoline from GOST 32513-2023, diesel from GOST 32511-2013, liquefied petroleum gas from ISO 3993, coal from the IMSBC Code table, primer and motor oil from manufacturer data sheets. Two rows that agree to the last digit under different names are treated as one source, not two.
A spread wider than a tenth between sources means the substance is not published at all. That rule kept out paint (two white water-based paints from one range differ by 12–15 %), cat litter (wood against mineral — a spread of one and a half times) and gravel: our own gravel calculator gives 1.69–1.84 kg/L while the FAO handbook gives 1.30–1.65, and those bands do not overlap. Until a discrepancy like that is understood, saying nothing is more honest than answering with an average no source supports.
