    Converting Terabytes to Gigabytes

    What are Terabytes and Gigabytes?

    A terabyte (TB) is a unit of digital information equal to 1,024 gigabytes or about 1 trillion bytes. It is commonly used to describe the capacity of modern hard drives, SSDs, and cloud storage plans.

    A gigabyte (GB) is a unit of digital information equal to 1,024 megabytes. Converting TB to GB helps understand how much data you can store in terms of individual files and applications.

    Terabytes to Gigabytes Formula

    To convert terabytes to gigabytes, use this formula:

    Gigabytes = Terabytes × 1024

    Practical Conversion Examples

    • 1 TB = 1,024 GB

    FAQ

    How many gigabytes are in a terabyte?

    In the binary convention used by Windows and most operating systems, 1 TB = 1024 GB, and that is what this converter applies. Drive manufacturers use the decimal convention instead, where 1 TB = 1000 GB.

    Why does a 1 TB drive show only 931 GB?

    The label counts 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, while the operating system divides that figure by 1024 three times: 1,000,000,000,000 ÷ 1024³ = 931.32. No space goes missing — the two sides simply count in different units.

    What is the difference between GB and GiB?

    A gibibyte (GiB) is exactly 1024³ bytes, the IEC unit, while a gigabyte in the strict SI sense is 1000³ bytes. Everyday usage calls 1024³ bytes a gigabyte, and this converter follows that everyday convention.
