What is 8.5 rounded to the nearest whole number?

Answer

8.5 rounded to the nearest whole number is
9

Nearest whole number — no decimal places. The tenths digit decides: 5–9 round up, 0–4 keep; the decimals are dropped.

Exactly halfway between 8 and 9 — equally close to both. The halfway rule rounds away from zero, as in school and Excel ROUND: 9. Round half to even (banker's rounding) gives 8.
