How to Use the Percentage Difference Calculator
The percentage difference calculator quickly determines how much percent one number is greater or less than another. This tool is perfect for comparing metrics, analyzing price changes, investment returns, or academic calculations.
Percentage Difference Formula
The calculator uses the following formula to determine percentage difference:
- When first number is greater: ((First number / Second number) × 100) - 100
- When first number is smaller: 100 - ((First number / Second number) × 100)
Note: this tool measures the directional difference relative to the second number, which is the base of the percentage. Because the second number is the reference point, the result depends on the order of the two numbers and is not the same as the symmetric, average-based percentage difference — |a − b| ÷ ((a + b) ÷ 2) × 100 — used by some sources.
How to Calculate Percent Difference — Step by Step
Here is a worked example of how to calculate percent difference between 30 and 20:
- Divide the first number by the second: 30 ÷ 20 = 1.5
- Multiply the result by 100: 1.5 × 100 = 150
- Subtract 100: 150 − 100 = 50% — so 30 is 50% greater than 20
In the opposite direction the difference is not symmetric: 20 ÷ 30 × 100 = 66.67, and 100 − 66.67 = 33.33% — so 20 is 33.33% less than 30.
