FAQ
How do you write a percent as a fraction?
Put the percentage over 100 and reduce it. 8% is 8/100, and dividing both parts by 4 leaves 2/25. The denominator before reduction is always 100, because "per cent" means "per hundred".
What do you do with a decimal percent such as 12.5%?
Clear the decimal first: multiply the numerator and the denominator by 10 for every decimal place. 12.5% = 12.5/100 = 125/1000, and dividing both parts by 125 leaves 1/8.
How do you know a fraction is in its simplest form?
Divide the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common divisor; the fraction is simplest once that divisor equals 1. For 8/100 the greatest common divisor is 4, which gives 2/25 — and since 2 and 25 share no factor, nothing further can be cancelled.
