FAQ
How many yards are in an inch and in a foot?
1 in ≈ 0.0278 yd and 1 ft ≈ 0.333 yd, because 1 yd = 36 in = 3 ft exactly. So yards = inches ÷ 36.
Why is the answer often rounded?
The division comes out even only for some numbers of inches (9 in ÷ 36 = 0.25 yd); often the decimal never ends: 100 in ÷ 36 ≈ 2.78 yd. The page rounds to two decimals (three below one yard) and adds the exact form in whole yards and inches, 100 in = 2 yd 28 in.
Where does 36 inches in a yard come from?
Since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, 1 yd = 0.9144 m and 1 in = 2.54 cm, both exactly, so 1 yd = 36 in exactly.
How do I buy fabric measured in inches?
Fabric is sold by the yard: convert the length you need and round up to a whole yard — 100 in = 2 yd 28 in, so buy 3 yd = 108 in.
