Fixed vs. Movable Holidays

Holiday dates come in two kinds:

  • Fixed — always the same calendar date: Christmas (December 25), New Year (January 1), US Independence Day (July 4), Valentine's Day (February 14).
  • Movable — the date changes every year: Easter depends on the lunar cycle and the spring equinox, Thanksgiving is the 4th Thursday in November, Ramadan follows the Islamic lunar calendar.
That's why it pays to check the date for a specific year: movable holidays land on different dates and weekdays from one year to the next.

Seasons — the Astronomical Start

For the seasons (spring, summer, fall, winter) the calculator shows the astronomical start — the day of the equinox or solstice — not the first of the month. For example, the first day of fall lands on the autumn equinox (usually September 22 or 23).
