How to Use Unix Timestamp to Date Converter

    What is Unix Timestamp

Unix Timestamp (also known as Epoch time or Unix time) is a way to represent time as the number of seconds that have elapsed since January 1, 1970, 00:00:00 UTC. It's a standard time format used in Unix systems and most programming languages.

    Timestamp Converter Features

Our online Unix timestamp converter allows you to:

    • Convert timestamp to readable date - instant transformation of numeric values
    • Support large values - works with timestamps up to year 2100
    • Second precision - displays time with full accuracy
    • UTC format - Coordinated Universal Time
    • Multiple formats - various date display options

    Practical Applications

Unix timestamp converter is essential for:

    • Developers - debugging timestamps in code and databases
    • System Administrators - analyzing logs and system events
    • QA Engineers - testing time functions in applications
    • DevOps Engineers - monitoring and performance analysis
    • Data Analysts - working with time series data

    Popular Timestamp Values

Unix Timestamp 0 corresponds to 01/01/1970, 12:00:00 AM UTC

    Commonly used timestamps:

    • 0 = January 1, 1970, 00:00:00 UTC (Unix epoch start)
    • 946684800 = January 1, 2000, 00:00:00 UTC (Y2K)
    • 1000000000 = September 9, 2001, 01:46:40 UTC
    • 1577836800 = January 1, 2020, 00:00:00 UTC
    • 1672531200 = January 1, 2023, 00:00:00 UTC

    Output Formats

The calculator provides results in two formats:

    • Short format - MM/DD/YYYY, h:mm:ss a
    • Full format - Weekday, Month Date Year, h:mm:ss a

    FAQ

What time zone is the converted date shown in?

In UTC. A Unix timestamp has no time zone of its own — it is the number of seconds elapsed since 1 January 1970, 00:00:00 UTC — so to get local time you add your own offset to the result.

Why does my 13-digit timestamp convert to the wrong year?

Because it is in milliseconds, not seconds: JavaScript, Java and many APIs return milliseconds. Drop the last three digits (divide by 1000) before converting — 1577836800000 is the millisecond form of 1577836800.

Can a Unix timestamp be negative, and how far does the converter go?

Yes: dates before 1970 are negative, and -2208988800 is 1 January 1900. This converter accepts values from -2208988800 to 4102444800, that is from 1900 to 2100. Beware that 32-bit signed systems still overflow at 2147483647 seconds — 19 January 2038.
