What a half birthday is

A half birthday is the day exactly six months after a birthday. Nothing official happens on it — no age changes, no document records it. It is a custom, and it exists for a practical reason: a child born in July never gets a birthday with classmates, and a child born on December 27 competes with Christmas. Marking the date six months away gives them a celebration of their own.

The rule

1. Take the month and the day you were born — the year plays no part.
2. Move the month forward by six. July becomes January, November becomes May.
3. Keep the same day of the month. That date is the half birthday, and it comes round every year.

When people use it

• Summer and holiday birthdays. The most common reason by far — a school celebration for a date that falls when school is out.
• Babies and toddlers. Six months is a real milestone at that age, and the half birthday is the date families photograph.
• Splitting a shared date. Twins, or a parent and child born on the same day, sometimes move one celebration half a year away.
• Planning ahead. Half a year is a convenient reminder for anything annual you would rather not do on the birthday itself.
• Milestone half-years. Turning "twelve and a half" or "seventeen and a half" is a real marker for teenagers, and this is the date it lands on.

When the day of the month changes

Six months on from the 29th, 30th or 31st does not always exist, because the target month can be shorter. A birthday on December 31 points at June 31, which is not a date, so the half birthday moves to June 30. A birthday on August 31 points at February 31 and lands on February 28 — or February 29 in a leap year, which makes this the one half birthday that does not sit on the same date every year. August 29 and August 30 clamp the same way, and only in common years. Every other birthday keeps its day of the month exactly.

This is also where a half birthday parts company with plain date arithmetic. Ask a date calculator for "six months from December 31" and it normalises the overflow forward, to July 1 — every year, because June never has a 31st. A half birthday clamps backward to the last day of the month instead, so that it stays inside the sixth month. The two conventions disagree on exactly these dates, and neither is wrong: they answer different questions.

The other convention you will meet is counting 182 or 183 days instead of six months. It gives a slightly different answer, and worse, one that drifts: the date moves by a day or two each year and rarely keeps the same day of the month. The six-month rule is the one people actually use, and it is the one this calculator applies.

Doing it in your head

Add 6 to the number of the month, and subtract 12 if you go past December. November is month 11; 11 + 6 = 17; 17 − 12 = 5, which is May. The day of the month stays where it is.
